Deccan Chargerswins IPL 2009 in a thriller at wanderer's

The heart pounded the chest relentlessly – from the time Anil Kumble bowled Adam Gilchrist to long after the entire Deccan Chargers dug out raced to the middle to celebrate a fairytale victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in DLF Indian Premier League final on Sunday. It was a night when the Deccan Chargers refused to be tamed the Bull Ring.

The heart sought to gloss over Herschelle Gibbs's effort – painstaking and scratchy for the most past – when Deccan Chargers batted first. He finished with 53 not out off 48 balls. But the mind reminded the heart that it was perhaps the single most significant batting effort on a sluggish track in the grand final. Deccan Chargers ended up with 143 for six in 20 overs.

The heart cringed a bit when the vastly experienced Andrew Symonds chatted up Royal Challengers Bangalore young opener Manish Pandey but it also knew that the teenager will have grown up considerably. Pandey, of course, heard more of Symonds and faced the attack less as had got to play but seven deliveries before being dismissed by Pragyan Ojha.

Ojha took a leaf out of Kumble's book, put his hand up for his team and finished with three for 28 to play the lead role in Deccan Chargers' spectacular defence of the low score. Of course there were others who made it work for the team that drew on the twin fuels of hunger and self-belief as they pursued their goal with single-mindedness.

Ryan Harris starting the proceedings with a maiden over to Jacques Kallis; little-known Punjab fast medium bowler Harmeet Singh showing character under pressure and claiming two for 23; Andrew Symonds returning to scalp the dangerous Ross Taylor and Virat Kohli; RP Singh conjuring Kallis' dismissal and finishing with 4-0-16-1.

There was more. A spectacular catch by Harmeet Singh, who sprinted from long leg and lunged forward to get his hands under the skyer to dismiss a defiant Vinay Kumar in the 19th over. Gilchrist himself contributed with two wonderful stumping dismissals to curtain the innings of Roelof van der Merwe and Kohli.

Then again, it was hard for the heart not to reach to the gallant Anil Kumble. It is not often that a man does everything he could possibly do – bowl with the new ball and claim Adam Gilchrist, come back to pick up the wickets of Andrew Symonds and Rohit Sharma at critical junctures – and end up having to watch his team fall short by six runs.

Two teams that had finished eighth and seventh last season fought every inch and one had to run out winner at the end of a stunning game that climaxed a wonderful tournament. Believe me, the heart hasn't stop pounding through the writing of this piece; the words flowed even as a spectacular closing ceremony that followed such a breathtaking match.

KXIP v/s Deccan Chargers match 50

Kings XI Punjab captain Yuvraj Singh backed himself at a decisive moment in the match, claimed a hat-trick, kept his cool under pressure in the death over to stop Rohit Sharma from pinching a second fairytale victory in two days in the DLF Indian Premier League here on Sunday.

Yuvraj Singh’s second hat-trick of the tournament, straddling two overs, saw him claim the wickets of Herscelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds and Venugopal Rao to star in his team’s successful defence of their below-par score of 134 for seven in 20 overs. Of course, Irfan Pathan emerged hero too by bowling Rohit Sharma with a slower one in the final over.

The result allowed Kings XI Punjab stay in the hunt for a semifinal place with 14 points from 13 matches, the same as Deccan Chargers. Kings XI Punjab have a game on hand against Chennai Super Kings (May 20) while Deccan Chargers’s final game will be against Royal Challengers Bangalore (May 21).

Rohit Sharma made 42 off 26 balls (three fours and three sixes) to pull Deccan Chargers back in the game after Romesh Powar’s double strike in the fifth over and Yuvraj Singh’s hat-trick spread over the 12th and 14th overs allowed Kings XI Punjab to breathe easy. But an expensive 18th over by Wilkin Mota – 18 runs – saw the game swing back in Deccan Chargers’ favour.

Deccan Chargers, who had lost seven wickets in a heap and the match against Delhi Daredevils, went through the same emotions again. Needing to get three off the final ball to tie the scores, Ryan Harris struck Irfan Pathan to sweeper cover and settled to take two and had his back to the teenager Jaskaran Singh who was sprinting down the track for the third run.

Earlier, a workmanlike 56 by the never say die Kumar Sangakkara helped Kings XI Punjab make 134.The next highest score was 20 by Yuvraj Singh and Kings XI Punjab was left to pray that its bowlers and fielders would pull the rabbit out of the hat one more time.

Turning points: Rohit Sharma's dismissal in the final over sealed the issue for Kings XI Punjab because the tailenders panicked thereafter.

Longest hit: 104 metres by Rohit Sharma off Wilkin Mota.

Innovative stroke: In the last over Rohit Sharma scooped a ball over short third man for a boundary that swung the fortunes yet again.

Dot-ball hero: Believe it or not Yuvraj Singh bowled the maximum number of dot balls, 12 with Ryan Harris coming second best by bowling 11 dot balls.

Captain vs. captain: What Yuvraj Singh could not do with the bat, he did with the ball, claiming a hat-trick. His opposite number Adam Gilchrist failed to do much with the bat, but led his side well again.

Superb bowling, outstanding catches won us the game - RCB

Royal Challengers Bangalore won a thriller against Chennai Super Kings in the DLF Indian Premier League at Kingsmead,Durban on Thursday and skipper Anil Kumble credited the two-wicket victory to superb bowling and outstanding catches that his team took on the field.

"It was a fantastic effort by our team. Bowling was fantastic and the catching was brilliant. It was great effort getting rid of Hayden and Dhoni. The catches were simply outstanding. Our plan in the beginning was to get rid Haydos and Raina early, but somehow we could not succeed against Hayden. But other plans like unconventional field setting for a T20 came out good. We are taking it one game at a time and hope to reach the semis," Kumble said.

MS Dhoni was disappointed to lose after coming so close to a win. "I am not really happy with our effort. We did pretty well to make a game out of it but let it go somehow. Our fielding hasn't been good throughout. We need to improve. We are a safe fielding side but not brilliant," he said.

Dhoni said that he wasn't happy with the score that they set. "We fell short by 30 to 40 runs. In our attempt for a big score, we messed up and everything went wrong thereafter. We must understand that it's not always about hitting fours and sixes, we need to take ones and twos as well. In that way we can put up a decent total at least," he said. Ross Taylor, man-of-the-match again, said that he was happy for his team's victory but would have been happier had he finished the game. "I am happy that my runs helped my team win. It always good to finish off the game, but it was disappointing that I could not do that myself," said Taylor.

Virat Kohli, who ably supported Taylor, said that low totals were always tricky to chase. "Low totals are always tricky. The wicket was also slow. When I went to the crease we were three wickets own and my plan was only to stick there and bat along with Ross. And thankfully we managed to do it. We have been working hard on our fielding even during the practice and it's showing on the field," Virat said.

Earlier, Mark Boucher said restricting Chennai Super Kings to 129 was a superb effort from their bowlers. "It was a good performance from our side. At on stage we thought it would be good if we could restrict Chennai Super Kings at around 160. So restricting them to 129 was a superb effort from our bowlers. The pitch is a bit slow. Ball would get softer with time and it will be difficult to hit. But I think we will get to the target," kumble said.

Extra time reserved for rain hit games

The Indian Premier League Technical Committee has changed some important playing conditions with immediate effect. The changes relate to substitutes, decisions on clean catches and time reserved for rain-hit games. But the most important and interesting one relates to the legality of the delivery when the ball hits the new-age sky camera which has been a feature of IPL 2.

Substitute fielders will be permitted only in the event of injury, illness or other wholly acceptable reasons. The panel wants to ensure that substitutions should be limited to extreme circumstances and should not include what is commonly referred to as a ‘comfort breaks’. It is clear that the IPL Technical Committee wants to be firm in such cases.

For long, the usage of TV replays in decision-making has been debated in cricketing circles. But in IPL, the change has already been made. The field umpires have been empowered to consult the third umpire in event of their having doubts about catches.

Should both umpires be unable to make a decision, they may consult by a two-way radio with the third umpire. Following such consultation, the final decision will be made and given by the bowler’s end umpire, who will take into account the on-field umpires’ initial views and any other advice received from the third umpire. This way there will be a lot more clarity and more chances of reducing human error. The third umpire so far has been employed to make calls on line decisions – run out, stumping or for judging boundaries.

Another important change in ruling comes about in the case of rain-affected games. Only two games have been washed out. And the new ruling provides for an extra hour for the league games whereas the semifinals and final will have two extra hours to help have a game played. More importantly the final will not have a reserve day.

The IPL Technical Committee has brought further clarity on what may happen in case a Yusuf Pathan or a Andrew Symonds ends up hitting the sky camera or the wires associated with the fly-cam. The ball in such case will be declared a dead-ball and allow another ball would be bowled.

Rajasthan Royals win comprehensively

In what seemed to be a tight match before turned nothing more then a formality by RR which won comprehensivly playing against Kings XI Punjab at durban, Yuvraj Singh must have been repenting over his decision to make opposite team to bat first. here is summary of the match.

Openers Naman Ojha (68, 51 balls five fours, five sixes) and Graeme Smith (77, 44 balls, 12 fours, one six) posted the best stand in the tournament this season - 135 runs - and Ravindra Jadeja (33, 12 balls, five fours, one six) ensured that Rajasthan Royals made 211 for four in 20 overs, the biggest total in 30 matches. Ojha was fabulous with his big, clean strikes allow Smith to find the form that fetched him the man of the match award and frustrated Kings XI Punjab no end. Yuvraj's pace bowling trio of Irfan Pathan, S Sreesanth - coming off an injury - and Purple Cap holder Yusuf Abdulla - all disappointed him by either pitching it up or delivering the ball very short on a batting track.

On the contrary, Rajasthan Royals paceman Amit Singh found the right length to hit the deck and cause grief in the Kings XI ranks when they chased 212 for a win. Seeking quick runs, Kings XI Punjab were reduced to two for two in the first over when Sunny Sohal and Karan Goel fell to Amit Singh.

When Simon Katich, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene fell before eight overs were complete, it was all over bar the shouting. Yuvraj Singh hit a few lusty blows but Kings XI Punjab had left themselves with an unsurmountable peak to scale. The little known Amit Singh, 27, finished with figures of three for nine in his four overs and could count himself unlucky not to have been given the man of the match award.

With nine points from eight games Rajasthan Royals rose to the second place in the table behind Chennai Super Kings. Kings XI Punjab, second at the start of the game, slipped to sixth place in the league, wondering what they need to do to get back in the top half.

Chances are limited for Mortaza, Langeveldt: Buchanan

He is the man in the firing line because everything that he planned has gone wrong, but even in adversity, Kolkata Knight Riders director of cricket John Buchanan has maintained a calm exterior as was on display during the media conference at the end of the day.

Excerpts from Buchanan's press conference:

On Mortaza not getting a game: Yeah, look at the moment we have adopted a batting strategy. So that's where our international effort is. So does that mean that guys that are international bowlers, whether it be Langeveldt, Mortaza, Mendis whoever it might be their opportunities are limited at this time. It is a question that we have posed to IPL a number of times about the involvement of more players on the field. I have personally mentioned that a number of times. Hopefully IPL will look at that more seriously going forward into next season and beyond.

On poor fielding: And yes as Brendon said today our fielding certainly in the six overs just let us down. I mean we were in a position from where we could have taken the game away from Punjab at that stage I thought. We controlled our innings, as Brendon said. We grafted that batting innings very well. We really needed to back that up straightaway in the first six overs. Unfortunately we just didn't do it, which gave Punjab a little bit of leeway which they used effectively.

KKR v/s kings XI Punjab - match 27 Preview

What's at stake:For Kolkata fight to stay alive in the tournament. Its a case of now or never. If it happens now then fine or else they could all be back on the flight back home. Kings XI Punjab need to win to keep semi-final hopes alive, instead of making it a shoot-out

Captain vs captain:Brendon McCullum needs to fire, if he does, then good, if he doesn't Kolkata Knight Riders will only be making it tougher for themselves. Yuvraj is just coming off a hat-trick and will be high on confidence.

Key battles: Ishant Sharma vs. Yuvraj Singh's blazing blade will make for an interesting contest just like Irfan Pathan vs Chris Gayle and Yusuf Abdulla vs. Brendon McCullum.

Team news: Chris Gayle leaves Kolkata Knight Riders right after this game, so its the last chance for him to make amends.

Form guide:Kolkata Knight Riders are struggling to get a win on the board after the defeat in the Super Over by Rajasthan Royals but Kings XI Punjab are proving to be a surprise team to beat because of their disciplined bowling efforts. So it makes for a contest with plenty to look forward to.

Duminy worth the money spent on him

Footballers are accustomed to being traded for millions of dollars from one club to another. It’s routine. Cricket, however, was not too accustomed to this before the DLF IPL. So when players like English duo Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff were sold for $1.55 million, the highest fee of the second auction, management and fans of the respective Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings wanted a major return on the investment.

Now that both have returned home, KP for national duty and Freddie through injury, and especially in the case of Flinftoff, it has been proven that the most expensive players don’t guarantee success.

But like Chelsea have shown in football, money does have it benefits, and at the moment JP Duminy is demonstrating it for the Mumbai Indians. When the richest man in India, Mukesh Ambani, splashed $950 000 on the young South African, many were bemused. Who was the little left-hander from Cape Town? Yes, he’s just come off from a spectacular debut series in Australia for the Proteas, but surely that’s too much for a player so inexperienced? It was just one series after all.

Fortunately for the Mumbai Indians, South African legends Shaun Pollock and Jonty Rhodes knew the capabilities of Duminy, with Pollock having played with the 25-year-old during the latter stages of his stellar international career. He knew Duminy had for years dominated the South African domestic scene since making his debut for Western Province whilst still at school.

“It’s great having Polly around, as I do lean on him sometimes. I have spoken to him about the pressure of the big price tag, but he always says that I must just relax and go out there and play my natural game,” says Duminy.

Yusuf is a fantastic finisher: Warne

Satisfied with his team's performance, Warne said that he was happy to see his team peaking at the right time and hoped that they would reach the semifinals. "The boundaries were short and we thought anything to chase between 160-165 would be fine. We bowled well and were happy to restrict Deccan Chargers at 141. We started our chase badly but came back strong later. We just tried getting Yusuf down the order. He is such a good finisher of the match and he once again played a crucial role in our victory today," said Warne.

Deccan Chargers' captain Adam Gilchrist said that it was a great game in which competition was at its highest level. "We should have scored more but then 141 was a defendable total. We had concentration lapses. It was a high level competition as the match went to the second last ball. We should have won the game but you are bound to lose a few when you play 14 games in a tournament," he said.

Yusuf Pathan, who was given the man-of-the-match award for his all-round performance, said that he was enjoying his cricket at the moment and was thankful to Shane Warne for showing the confidence in him. "I am happy that Shane Warne has shown so much of faith in me. I delivered for my captain today and I am happy about it," he said.

Royal Challengers played the better game: Yuvraj

Yuvraj Singh’s disappointment was there for all to see. It is not often that someone who claims a hat-trick, scores a solid half-century and claims the man of the match award ends up on the losing side. The Kings XI Punjab captain had to ride the roller-coaster of emotions, leading to disappointment after his team lost by eight runs to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Yuvraj said that they should have won the match but conceded that Royal Challengers played the better game. “We didn’t get enough partnerships. It was a good bowling display by Royal Challengers. The pitch is getting slower but I won’t blame it for our loss. It’s simple that we should have played better and worked on building partnerships,” he said.

Anil Kumble was quite happy about the win as it was his first match as the captain of Royal Challengers. “It’s a great challenge to lead in this format of the game. It’s a new thing for me but I wasn’t under pressure,” he said. “I have bowled well so far and have been amongst the wicket takers. I think despite not playing competitive cricket after my retirement, it’s just the rest that I have had in these five months and the free mind I think with, have been proving fruitful.”

Umpires report Kamran for suspect bowling action

At the game between the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals played out at the Centurion in Pretoria last evening, the on-field umpires Mr. Rudi Koertzen and Mr. G. A. Baxter, observed that Rajasthan Royals left-arm fastmedium bowler Kamran Khan had a suspect illegal bowling action on certain deliveries.

On completion of the match, footage was obtained and examined by all the three umpires including Mr. Amish Saheba who was the TV Umpire for the match and it was their collective belief that further action was necessary under the MCC's Laws of Cricket section 24.3 that governs the game. The match referee for the game at the Centurion was G. R. Viswanath.
